Former Wolverine Zahn to be Inducted into Maryland State Athletic HOF

BURNIE, Md. -- Former University of Michigan baseball player (1966-67)
and coach (1996-2001) Geoff Zahn, who was born in Baltimore, Md., will be
inducted into the Maryland State Athletic Hall of Fame on Nov. 10. Zahn, who
had a 13-year Major League career with four teams, is one of seven athletes who
will be inducted in a ceremony in Glen Burnie, Md.
Zahn was 12-2 in his two seasons on the mound for the Wolverines, setting
the then-career winning percentage record of .857. In 1967, Zahn was 9-1 with a
1.19 earned-run average and shared the Ray Fisher Award as Michigan's co-Most
Valuable Player. He also earned second team all-district in his junior year.
Zahn signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers in January of 1968. He spent six
seasons in the Dodgers' farm system before earning the Dodgers Rookie of the
Year award in 1974. He played for the Dodgers, the Chicago Cubs, the Minnesota
Twins and the California Angels in his 13 seasons, going 111-109 with a 3.74
ERA. He was selected to the Sporting News All-Star team in 1982, going 18-8 for
the Angels and finishing sixth in the Cy Young
balloting. He also was the 1983 Angels Pitcher of the Year.
Zahn was the head coach of Michigan from 1996-2001. He guided the Wolverines
to a Big Ten regular-season championship in 1997 as Michigan was 36-22 overall
and 17-9 in conference. Zahn and the Wolverines then won the Big Ten Tournament
title in 1999, defeating Minnesota, 12-11, in the championship game. U-M went
on to play in the 1999 South Bend Regional, going 2-2 in that tournament.
